How To Actually Improve Race Relations
Hint: Do the opposite of what we’re doing right now
Let me ask you a question, do you feel like the relationship between different races has been improving over the last 5 years? Or have they been getting worse?
From the year 2000 to around 2015, race relations were constantly improving year by year. Racism had changed from being commonplace, to being marginalised and completely unacceptable.
Schools had a zero tolerance policy for racism, as did the workplace. Any politician who made racist comments was shunned and put into the “not a serious candidate” box by mainstream culture.
By 2015, people’s attitudes had genuinely shifted. At this time in western culture, we felt in our hearts that racism was wrong and that people should be treated as equals regardless of their skin tone.
We almost unanimously agreed that racists were complete morons. After all, how dumb would you have to be to think that a person’s skin colour was a good metric to judge somebody by?
It was like a dream. The world was heading in exactly the right direction.
Martin Luther King’s dream of living in world where people are judged on the content of their character rather than the colour of their skin was closer than ever.
