I think I'm confused by the label of patriarchy. Why is the fact that men hold more positions of power so important as to why we live in such a dominance hierarchy.

Surely, if we live in a matriarchy we would have exactly the same dominance hierarchy, with slightly different rules. I don't imagine that women are perfect, angelic creatures, and women were in charge, we wouldn't have the exact same problems we do now.
