I think it's hard for people to understand that giving people harsh punishments for things like drugs can actually be the kind thing to do. Being too lenient on the sale of drugs can cause more suffering, not less, as drug use increases inside a country.

It could be worth mentioning that Japan doesn't take many immigrants, which may also help it stay a safer place.

And finally a culture of respect, something very much lacking in western countries.
