I think Medium used to display curated and hand-picked articles to us. Now it uses an algorithm model similar to Youtube whereby we're recommended similar things to what we've clicked on before.

I also assume that in order to maximise their own profits they're paying writing less and less and instead taking all the subscription money for themselves.
