I think you might be looking at it a bit too narrowly. Take a step back and look at the culture from a wider lens.

Is racism acceptable in the workplace? Is racism acceptable at school? Is it acceptable on TV? Is racism acceptable in the general social life of the USA?

I think the answer to those questions is a resounding: No. Therefore mainstream culture does not accept racism. This was not true in the past; it’s a sign of huge progress in race relations.

I don’t know what racist comments Trump has made (I’m from the UK, not the US) but I know that he didn’t stand behind the podium during one of his speeches and say them on live TV. If he did, I’m sure most of the American public would not have voted for him.

I also think many of his voters had other reasons for voting for him, in spite of his sexism and racism. His opposition, Hilary Clinton, provided absolutely no change and is also a corrupt individual herself.
