It's evolutionary psychology. For the survival of the species it's more important to save children and women than it is to save men.

It will be difficult to "socialise" our way out of this one. It's hard-wired into our brains.

You could argue that women's general flippant disregard for societal problems that men face is a result of this hard-wiring at the subconscious level of the brain. But I wouldn't die on this hill, it's just a theory.
