People say "The UK is a racist country!".
I say "Which country in the world is less racist than the UK?"
Silence.
The UK has been super successful in reducing racism. As far as I can tell, being a white guy, it's really not that common anymore. The prime Minister is Indian. The Mayor of London is a Muslim. London is only 50% white. Anybody who makes racist comments are shunned and despised. Nobody would dare say the N word, or call someone a "Paki" like they used to constantly.
Yet, as you say, everybody still talks as though we live in the past. It's so odd. Nobody seems able to appreciate progress when it happens.
Growing up, having personally been constantly singled out and picked on for having red hair (The UK's last acceptable form of discrimination), I always thought making racists comments were just plain stupid. I wasn't offended, it just never made any sense why the colour of someone's skin even mattered in the first place. Just like I couldn't understand why it mattered what colour my hair was.
