It took me months to feel I’d managed to get my head around this concept and accept that this is actually a thing! That there are people (lots of ‘em!) for whom other people / other lives don’t exist in the conventional sense.
Right?!
It’s such a hard concept to get your head around. I still can’t properly understand it. I read The Sociopath New Door after suspecting my boss might be a psychopath. And I think he actually was.
The general public has no idea that these people exist. Because their idea of a psychopath is taken from media. Not from reality. I’m happy that I decided to research this as I feel equipped to deal with the psychopaths who I’ll inevitably come across in my life.
I had to reshape my entire concept of humanity based on this — to accommodate this idea of genuine monsters living among us.
It takes you down one hell of a rabbit hole. What is a human being exactly? Could this be the reason for so much of the incredible evil in the world?
I’m not sure we can effectively tag all psychopaths, but we can definitely educate people that roughly 1 in 100 people don’t have a conscience.
