Romcoms are filled with female gaze. They often highlight men’s jobs, money, careers and status.

The female gaze is far more difficult to pinpoint, because it’s more complex and subtle. But generally speaking men are treated as “success objects”.

I think movies often treated women as 2D characters based on the preferences of men, I feel like this has changed lately and this is great.

The male gaze thing got quite a lot more complex, since large numbers of women started presenting themselves as sexual objects on social media, through their own free will.

How much do media representations affect society? It’s very difficult to measure, although I’d say it likely affects us on a subconscious level to some extent. More so in those who consume a large amount of media.
