The media doesn’t so much tell us what to think. It tells us what to think about.

Just as you say, all of the political conversations are happening inside the framework of discussion set out for us by the ruling class.

Why are giant corporations allowed to pay 0% tax? Why is America still in Afghanistan? Why is lobbying allowed in government?

These questions are almost never discussed in mainstream media.

In this way, the mass media really is a mind control tool. It controls what the masses think and talk about. Even the smart ones who think they’re informed citizens are only informed in the way the ruling class wants them to be.
