The medium is the message.
The medium will always determine the manner of conversations. Human psychology reacts differently to each medium.
With television, because most speakers have no more than a 5 minute time-slot, people sensationalise and generalise in order to get their point across. And well-meaning speakers leave the TV frustrated that they were not able to explain their point properly.
The internet, with it’s anonymity, means that people act in a way they would never act in a face to face conversation. And the like system in social media incentives people to make “Zinger” comments that have the most emotional punch. Well thought out, nuanced arguments don’t perform well on social media.
Right now, the best medium for discussion is the podcast. There is no time limit, which means speakers can explain their position properly. It’s often face-to-face (Or at the very least voice to voice) which removes the rudeness of anonymous communication. And most importantly, it’s a real conversation. Just recorded. These are the conversations we were evolved to have.
