The modern world is full to the brim with superstimuli.
Our food is filled with sugar. Sexual stimuli is available on demand with porn. Video games are superstimuli that hijack our natural desire for progression. And the designers of digital products are hell-bent on purposefully creating addiction to their products in pursuit of profit. Even if it means encouraging addiction in teenagers who’s brains are not equipped to tackle these superstimuli.
Don’t blame them? Do you think that social media addiction just fell out of the sky? Do you think that Smartphone apps contain addictive mechanisms by accident?
Of course we should blame them.
They’re shamelessly creating addictive products in pursuit of profit. They couldn’t care less if they’re ruining lives.
Capitalism has created a world filled with addictive superstimuli that must be carefully detected and avoided. How do you expect a teenager to navigate this kind of world?
